The Bertolt Brecht Archive was founded on 1 December 1956. It comprises well over one million documents, including over 200,000 manuscripts by Brecht and his various collaborators (Elisabeth Hauptmann, Margarete Steffin, Ruth Berlau, Walter Benjamin, Hanns Eisler, Paul Dessau and Caspar Neher among others). The same location houses the archives of Helene Weigel, Isot Kilian, Hans Dieter Hosalla, Peter Voigt, Hainer Hill, Vera Tenschert and Gerhard Seidel, and the Archive of the Berliner Ensemble. The archive contains collections of newspaper clippings, photographs and audiovisual recordings, as well as 'model books' (Modelbücher) and other documentations of theater, film and radio productions, events and exhibitions. It also features an extensive research library and the personal libraries of Brecht and Weigel.

Since 1978 Brecht and Weigel's apartments in the Chausseestrasse have been open to the public. Brecht lived on the second floor from October 1953 until his death on 14 August 1956. The size of his rooms allowed him to work collectively with his colleagues and students from the nearby Berliner Ensemble. Weigel occupied an apartment on the third floor, which she left to the Brecht Archive, moving into the ground floor until her death on 6 May 1971. In each of the apartments three rooms, including their furniture and libraries, have been kept in their original condition. Public tours are available from Tuesday through Sunday in German or English (see website for times). Brecht and Weigel's graves are located next door at the Dorotheenstadt Cemetery, near those of Hegel, Herbert Marcuse, Hanns Eisler and Heiner Müller.

In 1952 Brecht and Weigel leased the estate of the "Eiserne Villa", built in 1910/11 in the idyllic lakeside spa of Buckow and located about 45 minutes by car east of Berlin in the Märkische Schweiz. Here Brecht wrote the Buckower Elegien and conferred with many of his friends and co-workers from the Berliner Ensemble. Weigel continued to use the residence until her death. Since 1977 part of the grounds and one of the houses opened to the public as a museum devoted to Brecht and Weigel.
